It has been far too long since I’ve done a book review, so let’s get to it! Back in the saddle with Wanting You by Leslie A. Kelly, an intriguing romantic suspense filled with Hollywood royalty, serial killers, and hot as hell detectives… oh my!

Our female MC Evelyn Fleming aka Evie is a journalist who became a true crime author/makeshift private investigator following the brutal murder of her roommate. She stumbled upon clues that – combined with a bit of intuition and research – tied her friend’s death with other unsolved crimes. In the end a vicious and deranged killer was brought to justice and Evie discovered a career path for herself. Which had a side benefit of making her rather wealthy.

For her latest work she relocates from Virginia to California to investigate some of LA’s most famous unsolved cases, as well as reopening a few already solved ones. This puts her in the line of fire of a serial killer that has escaped capture for 20 years and he becomes a shadowy figure who stalks her and tortures her with psychological taunts.

Enter our bearded hero Detective Rowan Winchester. A man who has a scarred heart and ghosts chasing him at every turn. He manages to save Evie from an attack, paparazzi, and give her a mindblowing kiss, all in the first night.

About Nina:

The writing community is an important one. Essential. I know I speak often of the mental and emotional support that you can find there to help you get through the agonizing labor pains that come from birthing a book, but the worth of friends, CPs, and betas extends much further because they educate as well.

Now let me temper that statement because I can practically feel the hurt oozing through my computer screen from you to me. #WriteOnFriday ~ The Little Things

That title is moderately self-indulgent. I’m 5’1”. I’m a big (pun totally intended) fan of small things.

But there is value in them! Little goals, little victories, little accomplishments. Every one has worth and purpose and should be celebrated.

You know the old riddle/saying/quote (let’s just be real, I have no idea what it should be called and frankly I’m lucky I can remember to recite it correctly… or can I?) that asks, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer is, naturally, “One bite at a time.”

Now this had been an inspirational adage for a long, long time, but recently has come under some fire. I, however, remain a believer. Because the road to success, to your goals, to the very dreams that propel you through the hum-drum – and sometimes really crappy – days is paved with the satisfaction that comes from focusing on the small steps you’ve taken toward the ultimate prize.

You reached or EXCEEDED your word count goal for the day? That’s a step!
You finished your first draft? That counts as a step… maybe two!
You completed your first round of edits? Guess what! Another step!
You shipped your book baby off to beta readers and didn’t wind up with alcohol poisoning from self-medicating vodka intake? Totally a step!
You wrote a query and/or synopsis? Step and step!
You sent your polished manuscript off to an agent/publisher? Maybe more than one? Steppity, step, step, step, my friend!

All of those should be seen as victories… because they are! They require you to battle through self-doubt, negative inner voices, and fear to take each one. Receiving critiques and honestly applying them if and where they are needed takes bravery too. As well as a painful level of honesty with yourself and your work. It takes so much to overcome every growing pain that comprises this process. It takes fortitude and dedication and allegiance to your passion.

And if you have all of that, whether they wax and wane or whether they are a roaring fire that consumed your very being, then you are going to take each of those small, baby steps and turn them into the realization of your goal.

So reward each step, no matter how small it feels, because it is one more step to distance your from your beginning and help you reach your own happily ever after.

Book Review! A LITTLE BIT LIKE DESIRE by: Brooke Blaine

There is so much I want to say about A Little Bit Like Desire… but also so much I want to hold back because you need to experience it yourself.

A Little Bit Like Desire is a sweet and heartwarming tale of Trent Knox, former front man for a wildly popular rock band TBD who is now on a journey of self-discovery, and Shaw Jennings, tattoo artist, business owner, and master of the one night stand. If you are in the first chapter of this book you will be cackling insanely at my “sweet and heartwarming” description. A Little Bit Like Desire opens… with Shaw showing up at his BFF, Bash’s, house for a steamy hook-up with a stranger. In a completely darkened room. Where no one is allowed to speak. Yeah, it is as hot as it sounds.

I loved nearly every part of this story from their unique and stupidly sexy first encounter to the happy ending (I will scream if there isn’t a happy ending!), but one thing I enjoyed the most was Trent. He grew so much during the length of this novel from being a publicly heterosexual rock star who didn’t trust in his own talent and ability, to a man confident in striking out on his own and owning his bisexuality. All because of Shaw’s faith in him and unwavering support.

Not to be outdone, Shaw had his own path to trod. Instead of running from the above the belt feelings incited by Trent, he learned to embrace them and find beauty in being part of a committed relationship. A notion that had never had appeal for him before.

There are so many details I would love to highlight for you, but if you adore a pleasure read… THIS IS A PLEASURE! I devoured it within a few hours and am proud to call myself the newest member of Ms. Blaine’s fan club.
