#WriteTip ~ Motivation

There  is one vital word that should be on repeat in your writerly brain whether you plot or pants, whether you are writing the protagonist, antagonist, or villain. A word you need to have the answer to fairly early on unless you are okay with massive and repeated rewrites.

Why?

Why are your main characters in love? Do they have common goals and interests? Do they have similar backgrounds? What is the driving force making them want to be with each other? If you say lust I may bop you with a wet noodle because while physical attraction and sex are important (especially hot, steamy, kinky sex scenes that you will ABSOLUTELY share with me) they are NOT the basis for a relationship in real life or between the pages of a book. You know this, I know this, let’s move on.

Why does your detective need to solve this crime? Is it a serial killer that needs to be stopped? Was his or her family affected in some way?

Let’s flip it to the dark side. Why does your villain do what they do? Why do they have it out for the protagonist? What is their history? And, believe this or not, what makes them human? I know, I know, it feels good to hate the bad guy, but even they need to have some redeeming qualities. Something to humanize them. Hey, even take it as far as to make our hearts bleed in a way that we feel conflicted about hating them. I mean we still DO loathe and despise buuuuuuut…

What I am getting at here is motivation. Readers need a WHY, whether for the good guys or evil ones. Being “born this way” only works if you’re Lady Gaga. For depth and meaning, there needs to be a connection point between the audience and the character and motivation is a key point in obtaining that. We need to know and FEEL their driving force.

Putting this practically, how unsatisfying is it to watch a true crime show only to get to the end and know the WHO, but not the WHY? Be it a convicted killer who refuses to speak or one whose life ended before they confessed. Either way, it just leaves a big, gaping hole and you realize you just wasted three thousand, six hundred seconds watching something that didn’t satisfy your craving for justice because in some ways there is none without that explanation.

Don’t let your story leave your readers with a bad taste. Be an author they can trust to answer all their questions and leave them content, if not happy.

Kissing Jenna by: Kristen Proby

Thank you for signing up to share teasers for KISSING JENNA by Kristen Proby.   Below are the blurb, Pre-order links, Goodreads links and teaser graphic.

From New York Times Bestselling Author Kristen Proby comes the newest installment in her beloved Big Sky Series…

Jenna Hull owns and manages vacation rentals in her hometown of Cunningham Falls, Montana. She’s just completed the construction of her most exhausting project, the one she’s put her heart and soul into. The inviting, opulent Snow Wolf Cottages are the first ski in/ski out tree houses in the world.

Her biggest dream is about to come true, and she can’t let anything distract her.

Christian Wolfe is Hollywood’s it actor. If the magazines are to be believed, he’s the sexiest man on earth. He’s preparing for the biggest movie role of his life, and his agent has booked him in a hot new ski lodge in Montana, tucked away from crazy fans. He can’t wait for the break.

But what Christian isn’t prepared for is Jenna. With a face that could easily co-star with him in a movie and her ambition to put her stamp on Cunningham Falls, he can’t stay away. But even more intriguing than her beauty is the fact that she’s not at all impressed with his celebrity status, only turned on by the man behind the fame.

The love they’ve found is perfect—but time is running out before real life intrudes. Can they survive with both their dreams—and hearts—intact?

#WriteOnFriday The one where I fall apart…

This is where I date myself. Not date myself in the wine and roses and happy ending way (although I’d be a sure thing, so it’s not a bad idea), but a “lemme show you how old I am” kind of way.

Who remembers TGIF? Always had THE BEST shows, right? When you were younger you lived for TGIF. The Tanner family, the Winslow family, the Matthews family… they were all extensions of my own. I loved them dearly.

Why am I thinking of TGIF? Because this #WriteOnFriday I am exceptionally grateful it’s Friday. My mantra can easily be summed up by the four letters that defined happiness in my childhood: Thank Goodness It’s Friday. (Before I get shouty comments… I know the actual TGIF stood for Thank Goodness It’s Funny. This is called indulgence. Leave me alone.)

It. Has. Been. A. Week.

And the worst part? My brain has been eerily quiet. Even during the phases of my life where I wasn’t actively writing daily, I always had those voices in my head. Weaving stories that lulled me to sleep. Whispering the tales of their lives anytime I encountered silence, and even often when I didn’t. But this week has rendered my imaginary friends mute.

I had a rough rejection. It came at a hard time for me and it was a submission I’d pinned my heart and soul to. I know, I know. That’s a mistake I’d warn anyone else against, but you just can’t help it sometimes. We’ve all done it.

How did I handle it? Honestly in the worst way possible. Something I’d never recommend. I locked myself away. I cried. I sobbed the kind of sobs that are from your soul and so deep that you don’t even have tears. Yes, I know writers have a flair for the dramatic, but not one word of that was embellished. In the interest of full disclosure there were a couple of other things that fed into it as well, but… yeah. I’m still reeling a bit and my normally sensitive heart is bruised and sore.

Why am I telling you guys all this? Because I want a pity party? Because I need sympathy or attention? Nah, none of that.

I’m sharing because it’s real. Rejection hurts. Facing it in the solitary lifestyle that’s typical for writers can make it worse. Being turned down professionally is only compounded when it’s a darkness you face alone. But, as the saying goes, you’ll never know how strong you are until it’s your only choice.

So even though my voices are quiet, I’m writing.

Even though each word is a struggle, I’m writing.

Even though it’s the very last thing on the planet I want to do right now, I’m writing.

Because strong is my only choice and writing is my greatest passion.

And if you find yourself with an ugly R staring you in the face, know you aren’t alone. I’m here and I won’t let you go through it solo. Reach out anytime, friend.

I let her slip through my fingers…

No, that’s a lie. I was reckless and pushed her away.

I was never supposed to fall for her. She was my tutor. My best friend. My fantasy. I tried to stay away. I failed.

Then we graduated and everything changed. All I needed was a step back. A moment to breathe… And by the time I came up for air, she was in the arms of another man.

Four years later, everything is different. And when I see her again, I remember why I should have never let her go in the first place. But second chances don’t always come easy. Even when you’re determined to get them.

***

It started on day one…

New school. New life. And there he was, the boy I grew up with, walking up the steps of my very first class. Except now, the boy from my memories was gone, and his place was an Adonis of a man.

It didn’t take much for me to fall for him. Even though I knew we were doomed from the start. But when you find something that perfect, you don’t second guess it.

Until it ends.

Four years later, he’s back. Steamrolling through my life like he never broke my heart to begin with. Only this time, I’m older, wiser and know that second chances are the stuff of fairytales.

Excerpt

Whoever I was dancing with was sexy as hell, and the way he moved against me, his hand keeping me flush to his body was turning me on like nothing else. A memory flashed in my head of the last time I was turned on this much, and I knew if I hadn’t been completely drunk I would have realized who this was much sooner. There was only one person who made me feel like this.

“What are you doing here Dorian?” I spun around in his arms, running my hands over his hard torso, feeling his muscles flexing with every move of his hips.

His brown eyes met mine, and that smirk of his appeared. I wanted to kiss that smirk right off his face.

“I was having a chat with a friend of mine, and spotted you dancing like a teenager in her bedroom. So, I thought I’d get a better look.” He was provoking me, as usual.

I leaned in close, rubbing my breasts against his chest, moving down his body then back up. He was completely in control of himself when my eyes met with his gaze. I thought I would have at least gotten a hiss out of him or some reaction. Oh well.

“What are you doing, Esme?” His calm voice had a bit more bite in it.

I swayed, enjoying myself whether he was dancing with me or not.

“I’m on Operation Get Esme Laid,” I sang out in my drunk-ass voice.

That brought a reaction out of him. His eyes darkened, and his fingers gripped my waist a bit harder. I wished I knew what he was thinking, so of course drunk me asked. His head leaned in, his breath tickling my ear since my long hair had been braided to the side so my back could be seen.

“I’m thinking about fucking you and getting my curiosity out of my system.” His words were low, and I felt the vibrations shiver down my skin, making me shudder.

I turned back around, pulling out of his grasp, my finger waggling at him.

“Too bad you wouldn’t stoop low enough to fuck me in the on-call room, huh, Dorian? I would have rocked your world, but instead you couldn’t pull that stick out of your ass, and you lost this bomb-ass pussy,” I said, stalking away, feeling like a goddess for setting him straight.

EXCERPT

“Come out, come out wherever you are,” he murmured, scanning the street ahead.

A neon sign for Lavazza espresso glowed in the window of a café at the next corner. The ambient light sent a dull yellow swath across the sidewalk, the illumination fading as it reached the street.

The sign flickered and then went out as two women emerged from the café door. Dominic waited, listening to their muffled goodbyes and quick double-cheeked kiss as one left in a cab and the other started toward him.

She was oblivious to him as he watched. Clouds rolled in earlier obscuring the moon, but as if God himself commanded, they parted as she stepped off the curb and his breath caught in his throat.

“Beauty,” he murmured.

A riot of auburn curls framed a heart-shaped face, and soft hair kissed creamy shoulders. It fell in waves over bare skin highlighted by an off-the-shoulder spring sweater, and when she glanced toward the sky he saw her eyes were amber.

Carlos said it. He had a weakness for pretty redheads and this one was gorgeous with just enough curves to make his mouth water and his fangs tingle.

You’re horny. Either that or you haven’t fed in a while…

Dominic smirked to himself at Carlos’s words.

Knowing you, it’s probably both.

Dominic watched the woman turn the corner into a darkened street. Rome was safe. At least that’s what the travel brochures liked to claim. Average humans had no idea what prowled the ancient streets in the small hours of the night. It wasn’t just muggers looking for a quick hit.

He followed, keeping his distance. No matter how tempted, he had other business to attend, but he could play Good Samaritan for now.

Her footsteps echoed in the silence, the tap tap of her boots bouncing off buildings on either side. He hung back, but her senses were sharp and she glanced over her shoulder as if she knew someone followed.

She picked up her pace, heading for the florescent lights under the façade canopy of a typical three-star side street hotel. Two blocks. That’s all she had to walk before he got back to the task at hand. Once inside, the pretty woman was no longer his concern.

“Belinda…” a voice called from the shadows. “The mistress waits for you and so do I.”

Startled, she stopped short on the sidewalk and looked across her shoulder. “Is someone there?”

The voice laughed and she took a step toward the darkened alley to peer into the gloom. “Who’s there? Show yourself!”

“Come see…”

As if mesmerized, she took another step, but before she could move into the darkness, Dominic knocked her back to the sidewalk.

She fell with an expletive, pivoting on her heel to break her fall with both palms. “Ow! Shit!”

“Didn’t your mother tell you not to play in the dark?” His mouth was a harsh line, but at the stunned look on her face, he softened.

“No.” She slapped his hand away and got up on her own, dusting herself off. “She told me not to talk to strangers, especially pushy shovey ones!”

“I’m sorry, but you were about to step into that alley and someone was there, waiting. Someone you wouldn’t want to tangle with. There are dangers in the shadows.”

“Wait, you heard the whispers?”

Dominic nodded.

Belinda raked a sore palm through her hair, but was too freaked out to wince. “So I’m not crazy. I thought I was hearing things.” She hesitated, sparing a glance for the dark alley before looking back to Dominic. “But he knew my name.”

He nodded again. “I heard. Belinda. It’s beautiful name for a beautiful girl that almost got into a situation she might not have been able to get herself out of.”

“I’ve never been the dumb girl before, but I guess there’s a first time for everything,” she mumbled, giving him a sheepish glance. “I’m actually pretty smart.”

He bent to pick up her purse and handed it to her. “Then do me a favor smart girl,” he said with a smile. “Go back to your hotel and lock the door behind you. Pull the shades and don’t answer the door for anyone, at least not until morning.”

“Wait,” she said as he took a step toward the alley. “Where are you going? I don’t even know your name.”

He looked at her and shrugged, fighting every urge to take her a kiss her then and there. Another place, in another time. Maybe.

“It’s better that way, beautiful.” Dominic took off after the voice knowing exactly who it belonged to.

About Marianne Morea

Who am I? Well, that’s a good question. When most people think of romance suspense authors, the image of Kathleen Turner as Joan Wilder in ‘Romancing the Stone’ usually comes to mind. A lonely woman sitting in a bathrobe and fuzzy slippers, conjuring lovers and adventure in her imagination. In other words, one step away from being the neighborhood cat lady.

If that description made you cringe, then you know how we writer’s feel. Thankfully, for most of us that image is far from accurate.

I have been married for 23 years, have three beautiful kids, two dogs and a cat. I am a 2nd degree black belt in traditional Japanese karate and as I’ve said, I love to travel and my romantic and spontaneous husband shares that passion with me, so my stories get plenty of inspiration!

In the meantime I am also a founding member and previous President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre. Of course, I’m still writing and when I’m not ‘bichok’ (butt in a chair hands on keyboard), I’m off with my hubby and our kids to exciting destinations.

Cat lady? I don’t think so.

Craving Mr. Kinky by A.M. Madden and Joanne Schwehm
Publication Date: June 20th, 2018
Series: Mr. Wrong #4
Genre: Contemporary Romance

CMK_FrontCover_Lo_Res_Final

Here’s a tip: When you least expect it, expect it.

I’d been known to have my share of beautiful women. Usually, I met them in a bar, through a mutual acquaintance, or even when photographing them.

Imagine my surprise when a gorgeous blonde drove her car into mine on the way to a party.

No more than a minute after our run-in, a string of colorful words flew from her mouth in rapid fire.

Unexplainably, the angrier she became the harder I got. All sorts of scenarios played in my head of how I could get her to shut up. I was all for feisty women, but I preferred leaving that for the bedroom—not on the streets of New York.

When I learned she was a school teacher, that worsened my disposition. What man didn’t have a dirty teacher fantasy at one point in his life? I decided it was my turn to teach her a thing or two… or so I thought. Little did I know, Miss Prim-and-Proper would turn the tables on me.

She called me Mr. Kinky, and that was fine with me.

Lesson learned: Desire always trumps logic.

Wanted by: Kelly Elliott

.

This is unusual for me, but I sat here staring at the blank Word document for far longer than I care to admit while trying to figure out how to begin a review on Wanted. Truth be known… I didn’t just read this story. I didn’t finish it today, yesterday, last week, or even last month. It has been a while since I finished my initial read of Wanted. Yes, I said initial read. I have since read all of it at least two more times and certain chunks… let’s just leave it at more than twice.

One really good place to start is by saying this is a New Adult story. You know the murmurings about New Adult being dead? Yeah I sincerely beg to differ. It is one of my favorite categories. So I’ll admit I started with a bit of a bias.

And then there was Gunner.

Holy smokes Gunner Mathews redefines hot. But then we add in thoughtful and romantic as he begins wooing his best friend’s sister Ellie Johnson, something he struggles with because of his fierce allegiance to Jeff. Sprinkle a dash of loyalty when we learn he intends on using his degree to return to his grandfather’s ranch and make that his life. Throw on a dollop of integrity as he wars with his desire to take his relationship with Ellie to the next level while guarding her damaged heart. The easiest thing in the world is to fall for Gunner.

Sadly, poor Ellie has heard a narrative from her alcoholic mother throughout her life that she just can’t shake. One that tells her she isn’t good enough. That she doesn’t deserve love. That no man will ever truly want her. And despite all the love Gunner showers on her, the numerous times he has proven himself, and his constant respect for her, she can’t silence the negative voice that plays on repeat in her brain.

Thankfully for me, Ms. Elliott is as big of a fan of the HEA as I am. And Wanted ends with a tear filled one. By tear filled I mean MY tears which began right around Christmas and ended about two pages from the end. Those who are familiar with the stories I create know I believe every HEA needs three things (which I will not name to avoid spoilers) and Wanted had every. single. one.

I have not read Jeff and Ari’s story YET, but I have to say I was not a huge fan of the path Ellie’s big brother Jeff went down during the course of Wanted. Nor was I Ari’s biggest cheerleader. I adored her unyielding love and support of her very best bestie Ellie (healthy female friendships for the win!), but not so much where Jeff was concerned. I found myself screaming at both of them and cringing at some decisions they made. They both may redeem themselves in Saved, but they each have an uphill battle in my mind/heart.

An extra special treat? Ms. Elliott includes her story playlist, including a few scene correlations, at the end of the book. THAT was a little surprise that I loved
